Employment minister sets out government’s plan to help kids who do not have wealth of family connections
ANY fan of the BBC’s Apprentice will know that the best candidates can come unstuck if they don’t buckle down and get on with the other people in their team.
Basic skills are what businesses really value: teamwork, turning up on time, work experience and a can-do attitude.
But lots of young people don’t know where to start because quite often they don’t learn these “soft” skills in school. And in the past many of us would have also picked these up when we took on a Saturday job or paper round at 16 – but these are in increasingly short supply.
We are determined to change this and make it easier for young people to get their first job.
At the moment specialist Work Coaches go into 130 schools across the country and talk to pupils about what they need to get their first job. We are going to fire up this scheme and by March we aim to be working in 1,000 schools.
We’ll give advice on CVs, teach pupils what they should wear to an interview and where to find work experience.
But we don’t just want to get people into jobs, we want them to keep these jobs and start to earn more too.
So we’ll talk to them about customer service, working with your boss and what you can do to give your earnings a boost, like taking an Apprenticeship.

The ‘soft skills’ gap means the difference between those young people who get the job and those that can become trapped in the cycle unemployment.
We will level the playing field and help every young person gain the skills they need to be a success.
People whose parents can’t give them a leg up with work experience or help with their CV shouldn’t miss out. And we’ll make sure they don’t.
Our work coaches will help thousands of school pupils build a solid career.
